Vladimir Khalikulov to perform !
This coming weekend, April 24-26, Monterey Symphony Orchestra will
present an absolutely rare and unique program. For the first time ever in
the 64-year history of the orchestra there will be no violin section at
the concert. It is a fantastic opportunity for the viola section to lead
the orchestra.
There will be one solo violin in two movements of Faure.
The Artistic Director of Ensemble La Campanella and Principal Viola of
Monterey Symphony, Vladimir Khalikulov, will lead the orchestra as violist
and concertmaster, for the first time in his 40-year career.
The program
includes a Schubert song for lower strings and fifty male voices, set to a
Goethe poem "Die Geister uber den Wassern" (The Souls on the Water), a
rarely performed gem. The winds and lower strings, led by the violas, will
then perform the Serenade no. 2 in A major by Brahms. Brahms was
especially fond of the viola and wrote many chamber pieces and solo works
for the viola. This is a unique opportunity to hear this splendid
symphonic work.
The heavenly Faure Requiem will be performed by winds and
lower strings, with a chorus of 150 voices and soloists. It is possible
that all these pieces in one program have never been presented in one
concert in any orchestra in the world. We are proud to be part of this
event. All information is available at the Symphony website,
